Kali Muscle is a man who has defied the odds and has become a name to reckon with among body builders and has even acted in movies, all this despite having been in prison for 11 years for robbery. He was born on February 18, 1975, in Oakland, California in a neighborhood rife with crime and poverty. Born among three children, he was raised by his mother and stepfather who considered him the ‘black sheep’ of the family.
Despite his humble beginnings, Muscle soon developed an interest in gymming and started working at the gym, 24 Hour Nautilus (now 24 Hour Fitness). The encroaching violence in his neighborhood forced him to carry his own gun even while at the elementary school. He was not good just at the gym, he excelled at sports as well and he soon started his studies at Fresno State University on a football scholarship.
However, tragedy struck as the older brother was killed while he was in senior year. Life was not done with him. During his second year at University, Kali was in extreme poverty that he was forced to resort to robbery to make both ends meet. He was caught and sentenced to 11 years in prison.
The 11 long years he spent at San Quentin State prison was to be a life changing period for him. Being confined in prison, Kali took to bodybuilding again to escape the monotony. He started working out ferociously. He pulled him up from the unfortunate circumstances that he was placed in and focused on building up his physique. He followed a strict diet of honey bards and the like and started developing his body in such a way that he had amassed 230 pounds of muscle.
But this period of solace did not last much longer. In 1997, all his weights were confiscated from the prison, not his alone, from every prisoner. As a protest to this, the inmates of the prison started using oranges as projectiles. But it was of no use. This protest using fruit did not bring forth any results. The weights were not returned to the inmates.
Kali Muscle was not a person to be put down by such things as confiscating weights. He started using water bottles, garbage bags and even the bodies of other men as weights to work out. It was quite natural that these unflinching efforts of Kali were not appreciated by the prison officers. He was even sent to solitary confinement for refusing to give up his passion. Kali has revealed some of these workouts he carried out in prison in his video series titled ‘Prison Workout’.
Kali was released from prison in 2010. In spite of his stint in prison, Kali was not ready to live up on his dreams. The undaunted bodybuilder moved to Los Angeles to realize his dream of making it big as an actor and a professional bodybuilder. He did not have to wait for long. Just two weeks later, he bagged a role in a music video directed by Matthew McConaughey for Jamey Johnson, the Nashville icon. This music video proved to be the break he was in need of. It served as a launch pad for this ambitious young man.
He was inundated by bookings to appear in commercials. He appeared in the ads of some popular brands like Honda, Snickers, and Comcast. However, what made his name memorable was the ad for Geico, the car insurance company in which he appeared as a bodybuilder directing traffic. This ad has garnered so many views so as to give rise to the catchphrase ‘happy as a bodybuilder directing traffic.’
There was no looking back for Kali after that. He has made a mark as a bodybuilder and has won a lot of titles to go with it as well. His most accomplished win is the Mr. California title in 2012.
Kali is well known not just as a bodybuilder, but as a motivational speaker as well. His story of rehabilitation is a source of inspiration to many. He is also in the process of completing his book that is also aimed at imbibing hope in people.
He has also set up a scheme to teach the youth from disadvantaged neighborhoods that they can have a life free of crime, drugs, and violence. This scheme is aptly named, ‘From Ex-Con to Icon.’
