Nico Erik Rosberg was born on June 27, 1985, in Wiesbaden, Hesse, West Germany. He is the son of Keke Rosberg, Finnish 1982 Formula One world champion, and Sina Rosberg. Nico spent a large part of his youthful years in Monaco, where he still resides. He speaks fluent Spanish, Italian, French, and English. He, however, does not speak Finnish because his father chose not to teach him that language seeing that it would not help him in his career. A Formula 1 driver himself, Nico is a dual citizen of Germany and Finland and has driven under the flag of both countries in the early part of his career.
He later chose to drive under the German flag seeing that the FIA only allows a driver to compete under a single country flag. He has had many successes during his time as a driver. For instance, while driving for the ART team, he won the 2005 GP2 Series. In 2006, Rosberg entered Formula 1 by teaming up with the Williams team. Then in 2010, he joined the Mercedes team after it was taken over by Brawn GP the previous year.
The majority of his of his successes took place while driving for the Mercedes team. In fact, he earned 30 pole positions and won 23 Grands Prix in all. During the 2014 and 2015 World Championship, he came in second behind his teammate Lewis Hamilton. The intense rivalry between him and Hamilton would continue right up to the 2016 season when he finally defeated Hamilton, making him the Formula One World Champion at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
At the height of his career, at 31 years of age, Nico Rosberg decided to retire in December 2016, a mere five days after beating Hamilton. When he announced his retirement, Nico said, “Since 25 years in racing, it has been my dream, my ‘one thing’ to become Formula One world champion … And now I’ve made it. I am on the peak, so this feels right.” He, however, decided to continue his partnership with Mercedes as an Ambassador just before the start of the 2017 Formula 1 season.
Apart from his career, Nico Rosberg has a personal side that includes his wife Vivian Sibold, whom he married in July 2014. They have a daughter together, Alaïa Rosberg, who was born in August 2015.
